The Problem!

One of the key reasons that people whose first language is not English, can be displaying behaviours/language that you or others believe can be improved upon are their spoken skills.

Communication and clarity and even at times authenticity can be impacted by not just a person's character but also by how they express themselves. Communciation issues can impact every area of performance.

Speaking skills are typically the most difficult of the language skills that migrants need to master. For some, its their pronunciation or accent, for others it may be the structures they use, yet for others it may be their expression or their confidence in their speaking.

The Problem Broken Down

Many people born overseas, who have English as their second language can have various speaking issues. Even though their speaking may be quite quite good, they can be held back by their:

This is not uncommon. In Australia we have a lot of immigrants, some of whom came through our educational system but still have language skills that don't measure up to the needs of a busy commercial environment. Some may have come here through our skills program who have exactly the same issues. 

You don't need to put up with it and nor do they. At the upper levels, it is easy to get stuck and make no or little improvement. There are various reasons why this can happen. Our mission is to find out the reasons are holding each person back and get then "unstuck" and moving again ensuring that they get to know what to do to improve AND to keep improving in every aspect of their spoken skills.

How we help

We design bespoke programs and work with each client so the kind of problems we just talked about disappear. This can entail working on different areas such as:

  • Pronunciation or accent 
    Thismay only be visibly in a small percentage of what they say BUT it can impede communication...and ultimately their confidence and their performance. Indeed, low confidence in this area can impact every area of their work life.
  • ExpressionHow they express themselves, whether it be with clumsy grammar or with inappropriate or ambiguous language can slow down communication and their performance.
  • Cultural issues 
    These can get mixed up with the language and make communication more difficult. It is sometimes difficult to deal with but sometimes be the main issue causing issues.

Our Solution

We specialise in working with professionals who already speak quite well BUT who are in need of bringing up their speaking skills to the levels where they don't feel held back and others don't feel there are difficulties.

We offer a fully customised program designed around the person's needs and designed to fit in with the needs of a busy person. Everything that is done is entirely focussed on the client's situation and needs.

We offer a free assessment of the client's needs, where we can assess what exactly is needed. We provide an evaluation that is based on over 40 years of working with people, from high performance executives to shop floor managers. This evaluation identifies:

  • the underlying factors that are causing the problems.
  • an itemised list of identified language issues...not a full list but thorough enough for you and your employee to see what they are facing. Indeed, we have found that providing a fully list can sometimes be counterproductive as it may be too daunting.
  • limited advice about any obvious lifestyle issues that may be holding them back
    (for example, insufficient time devoted to speaking English out of the workplace).

  • a step by step strategy that needs to be adopted if they are to overcome the issues they face

Our main program goes over 1 year. This time is needed as speaking is entirely a skill, not knowledge or understanding. We can't cram for it or force it. Skills take time to develop as we can only improve one skill at a time.  Initially the progress might appear slow as the client is learning the step by step methodology we have specifically developed for high level speakers. However, once the learner becomes skilled in it, the speed picks up.

Our Philosophy

Every person is capable of learning English to at least the level they speak in their mother tongue. 

What prevents people from succeeding is what they do. If you take the wrong actions, use the wrong tools, the results can only be as they are.

Unfortunately most people are trained as if language is knowledge, something to be studied and memorised. Language is a skill, like any other. Skills need to be learned as skills. Through studying a range of skills and what truly successful people to do to excel, we have taken the essence out and applied it to learning spoken English.

Skills are learned through this 3 step formula. Each of these steps is essential, leave one out and the outcome can only be "failure".

1: Identify precisely what it is that needs improvement/change/etc
2: Fix/adjust current performance
3: Integrate new behaviour into normal functioning

The critical aspect to all this is the need to have the learner 100% engaged/present in the activity.
Just think... could you ever learn to ride a bike without being 100% "there"?
The same is true in speaking.
