Don't get stuck with a Spoken English you are not happy with
Is Your English Holding You Back?
Have you got to the place where you know you need to improve but you feel you can't express yourself as well as you want? Maybe you feel stuck, or maybe you are just progressing too slowly.
If this describes you, then most likely you're noticing frustrations in your life, maybe in your work life, maybe in your personal life or maybe just your confidence has been taking a battering.
There are some other immigrants who you have seen speak English effortlessly with a close to native like pronunciation. But you don't feel like you can do that. You may feel you have tried everything, from classes, to books, to audio programs, to online programs, even to personal tutoring. You may even have had a lot of opportunity to use English. However, with all this effort and these experiences, you still feel you are not at the level you want to.
Yet, you still are hopeful (well you are here!) there may be some thing you can do to get past the obstacles that you keep coming against. I can assure you there is. Read on to find out why.
Why has your progress struck problems?
The critical thing to understand is the level you are at is dependent upon what you have tried, not upon what you are capable of. The reality is that you've already proved you are capable of learning to speak a language at least to the levels of those around you. The fact that you did it when you were very young does not mean that somehow those capabilities have been lost. They're not!
Our capabilities can seem to disappear for any number of reasons. Some of the more common ones relate to the way we are taught by well meaning teachers. No child ever learns their first language through rote memorisation, studying grammar rules, study and simple imitation. Yet, that is how most people are taught at school. Then they believe that is the way to learn. Hence, when they struggle, they usually question their own abilities rather than the methods they have been using.
Trying to drink soup with a fork will soon have you believing that you have no ability to eat soup. Especially so, if everyone around you, is doing the same. This is the problem many people face. The ones who do succeed do so out of our sight. So we aren't really aware of what they do. We assume that they do what we do, but we really have little or no idea what they are doing. We may end up believing that they somehow have the ability or gene we don't. That is why we think they can learn successfully. We don't consider that they may be doing something quite differently and how they approach their learning.
What can you do to change your results?
The reality is that there are simple things you can do to change what and how you learn. Once you do, you can start to learn in ways that produce the kind of results you are seeking. Discovering what these changes are is a key if you wish to improve and keep improving (till you get to the level you want).
As well as changing how you're approaching your learning and where you spend your time. Once yu start working in ways that work on the actual skills you do have and building on them, its amazing what can happen. The key is to work from where you are, not on some imaginary issues you may have!
What's needed is
- finding the obstacles preventing you from moving forward and show you what to do so you can avoid them
- discovering the what kind of practices you need to adopt so you move on from where you are, towards mastery
- working to set up powerful patterns of learning that you can use to keep learning
Andrew Weiler

About Andrew
I have spent my teaching life becoming the best English language teacher I could possibly by setting myself two goals:
- to work at seeing that my students improve the way they learn. Without achieving this, in most cases students hit a ceiling well below their aims.
- to work towards ways of learning English that attracted them so they felt drawn to learning, We need to enjoy what we do, so we keep doing more of it.
I have searched out world renowned educators and personal development figures, all in the interest of achieving my goals. This has enabled me to work in ways that not only assist the learning process but also to help them identify the obstacles which are holding them back.
